How To Get Out Of A Reading Slump

As I'm sure most people do, I find myself in a reading slump way too often. They usually happen if I've recently finished a book I didn't enjoy, or a book has taken me ages to get through! As someone who adores reading, I want to get rid of these feelings as fast as possible, so I thought I would share a few tips with any fellow bookworms on how I pull myself out of a reading slump!

SET YOURSELF A DAILY GOAL
I aim to finish every book that I start. Unless I completely hate the book, I'll usually battle through until I've finished it but sometimes this makes it difficult to continuously pick it up and read. I've found that one thing that helps me in finishing books quicker is to set myself a daily goal. Whether that's a chapter a day, 20 pages, or 50 pages a day, giving yourself something to work towards and accomplish will help to motivate you to pick the book up and start reading. Plus if you surpass your target you feel even better!

REREAD A BOOK YOU LOVE
If you're just struggling to find the motivation to pick up a book, pick up one you know you're going to love. For me this is usually the harry potter series and it never fails to get me back into reading. Re-reading something you previously loved reminds you how entertaining reading can be and gives me the motivation to find more books I love.

READ A SHORT BOOK OR NOVELLA
Similar to the previous tip, read a book you know you'll be able to read easily. There's no point attempting to slog through a 500 page book when you're not in the reading mood because it feel like that book will never end! Novellas are usually around 100 or so pages which make them super easy to get through and get back into the swing of reading.

TAKE PART IN A READ-A-LONG
Reading a book at the same time as someone else gives me such a huge motivational boost. You get to discuss things that happen, see where each other are up to, have someone tell you exciting things are ahead and chat about what you like/dislike. It makes reading much more of an interactive hobby although be careful not to give each other any spoilers! Also if you can't find a friend to read the same book as you, there are so many people and communities online that administer book clubs or read-a-longs!

LISTEN TO AN AUDIOBOOK
If you really can't hack picking up a physical book, maybe try listening to one! I've never experienced an audiobook before but it's something I'm definitely warming to. As someone who gets quite bad travel sickness, audiobooks would provide me with a way to read as I travel, which would not only help me ease out of a reading slump but also allow me to be productive in otherwise wasted time!
