Why You Shouldn't Be Scared To Make A 'Fool' Of Yourself

Has anyone seen that episode of friends where Rachel is too embarrassed to go running with Phoebe, because she runs in a crazy way? Well, I’m Phoebe. Whether it’s running like a crazy person in the park, dancing down the street to no music with my friends, singing at the top of my lungs in a pub, stopping in the street to take a million and one tourist pictures, these things don’t bother or embarrass me at all. If anything I love doing them. But I know a lot of people who cringe at the thought of them, so I’d like to share my reasons for why I think we should all be a bit more like Phoebe.

IF YOU’RE HAVING FUN, THAT’S ALL THAT SHOULD MATTER… The bottom line is, if you’re having fun doing these things that may make you look a little silly to those around you, then it shouldn’t matter. The thing that I find strange is that usually, most of those things I mentioned above are seen as acceptable to do if you’re drunk, but not if you’re sober. Why? Why is it acceptable for me to dance in the street with my friends if I’m drunk but considered weird and embarrassing if I’m not? I want to talk about this more but that needs it’s own blog post, but basically, if you’re having fun then nothing else should matter.

YOU DON’T KNOW THEM, THEY DON’T KNOW YOU… The people in the street/pub/park might look at you like you’re crazy or weird, but they don’t know you and you don’t know them. If you and you’re friends are laughing and enjoying yourself, then the weird looks from strangers don’t mean anything!

YOU WILL MOST PROBABLY NEVER SEE THOSE PEOPLE AGAIN… It’s very unlikely that you’ll ever see the stranger in the street that’s giving you a weird look ever again, so who cares? Do what you want and have fun, because it’s your life and the only people’s opinions who matter are the ones that you love.

DON’T GET TO 80 YEARS OLD AND BE FULL OF REGRETS… For me personally, I don’t want to be old and grey, thinking back to my younger years and wishing I’d enjoyed them more. Wishing I’d not cared so much about what other people thought and just had fun. I want to make the most of as much as I can, and if that means making a ‘fool’ of myself in the eyes of other people, then so be it!

Life is too short to overthink things and worry about what people think of you, just live in the moment and have fun!

  6. You're very right. And even though I've heard those reasons mentioned before, the fear still gets to me sometimes. But maybe hearing it this one more time , that it doesn't matter what these random people think as long as I'm enjoying myself, will help push me to try more things in the future. Thanks! :)

  7. I absolutely love your thoughts in this post! It is something that I can really relate to! I have put off starting a blog for a long time because I was scared of what other people might think, but after finishing university I have finally plucked up the courage with the help from some friends from uni! So thank you!

  12. I'm definitely a Phoebe too! I used to be so self-conscious and aware when I was younger, afraid to show my personality much. Now that I'm older, I'm definitely trying to care a lot less. It is not always easy sometimes, especially when there can be a lot of people mumbling and grumbling, but I'd rather be disliked for who I am than liked for who I'm not :)
