Why It's Important To Take Life At Your Own Pace

All too often we invest ourselves in other peoples lives. With social media being so heavily present in our every day lives, it’s incredibly easy for us to constantly see what other people are doing. Sometimes, it’s a wonderful thing. Sometimes seeing what other people are getting up to can motivate, inspire and uplift us. But other times, it can bring on feelings of jealousy or frustration that we aren’t doing/achieving everything that they are. I know I definitely struggle with this from time to time, and I always remind myself of the fact that things happen at different stages for everyone and that it’s incredibly important that I take life at my own pace, so today I thought I would share my reasons why!

WHAT’S RIGHT FOR SOMEONE ELSE MIGHT NOT BE RIGHT FOR YOU… Everything that we see people doing on social media might look and sound amazing, but it also might be the completely wrong thing for you. That office job that your friend is loving and working their way up in, you might hate, or on the flip side, being self-employed and working from home, you might struggle with. Instead of wanting exactly what someone else has, take it as inspiration instead. Note it down as something you might potentially be interested in, but not the be all and end all of a happy life. Everyone is different, and different things work for different people.

THINGS CHANGE WITH TIME… When I was in college, I had everyone (students and teachers alike) telling me to apply for university, even though I didn’t have any idea what course I wanted to do. I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to go! Even though I was pressured so heavily into just applying for anything, I stuck to my guns, I didn’t apply and I took two years out of education. Then, back in 2015, I found a course that sounded perfect for me and I changed my mind. I applied and now I’m about to start my third year. We change our minds all the time and what we think we want now, might not actually be what we want in the long run! Right now you might be watching all of your friends get married/have babies and be desperate for that yourself, but in 5 years time decide that actually, kids aren’t for you! Don’t rush into things because it’s what everyone else is doing. Take your time and make the right decisions for YOU.

THE ONLY PERSON YOU HAVE TO ANSWER TO IS YOURSELF… Just because someone might want a specific career for you, or for you to hurry up and settle down, it is NOT what you have to do. If you don’t want to settle down, don’t. If you don’t want to take that well-paid but boring job, don’t. If you don’t want to go backpacking across multiple countries, don't! The only person that gets to decide how you live your life is you.

NO ONE HAS LIFE FIGURED OUT… Social media might make it look like everyone has their lives figured out, but really, everyone is winging it. No one knows what curveballs life might throw at them and no one knows what someone might be going through behind closed doors. The only thing that matters is that you’re making the decisions that are right for you, in this moment, and living your life in the best way that YOU can.

  1. Couldn't agree more with this post! It's so easy to follow what others are doing because you're unsure on what it is that you want to do, but then often get stuck in a place you don't want too be. I bet you feel much better for taking those two years out of education to come to the decision of what you wanted to do, and it just goes to show that taking time out to think about the future is worth it!

    1. I'm so glad you liked it! <3 Honestly it was the best decision I've ever made. The course that I'm doing now didn't exist at my university when I finished college, so there's no way I would've been where I am now 2 years earlier and I also wouldn't have met the amazing people that I have! It's so so important to do what feels right for yourself <3 xxx

  2. This is so important and so true. Not everyone is the same and what might work for someone may not work for you!

    1. I'm glad to have helped! Just remember that whatever you decide now, that's not the be all and end all! You can ALWAYS change your mind in the future and nothing is set in stone. Do what feels right for you <3 xxx
