Why Making Small Differences Is Just As Important As Making Huge Ones

Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want to do with the rest of my life. Being a third year university student means that I’ve got people left right and centre asking me ‘so what are you doing after?’ that it’s pretty much all that’s been on my mind. As I’ve been endlessly scrolling through career choices and trying to work out what exactly I am going to do after I graduate, I've noticed a pattern. All of the jobs I was looking at were jobs where I helped someone else in some way. Whether that be as a teacher, a life coach, an author, or a therapist. I’ve always known that by the time I die, I want to have impacted someones life or the planet in a positive way. I want to make some sort of difference!
The thing is though, for a lot of people, making a difference is difficult. We don’t all have huge platforms to influence, or bags of money to donate, or spare time to spend working on making these changes happen. As much as we might want to, we can’t all make huge differences, but the one thing we can do is make lots of small differences!

IF EVERYONE MADE SMALL CHANGES, HUGE CHANGES WOULD HAPPEN NATURALLY
All too often, I hear people say ‘it’s not going to make a difference whether I do that or not’. I’ve seen people chuck a piece of rubbish on the floor because ‘it’s just one tiny bit of rubbish’, or saying they won’t stop wearing fur because ‘other people will still do it’. If every single person on this planet threw away the mindset that making changes in their personal life wouldn’t change anything, we would be living in a different world. If every single person recycled every bit of rubbish they have, this planets waste would decrease so much. If every single person stopped wearing fur, less animals would be killed. It starts with you, as an individual, and the small changes that you can make in your every day life will add up to huge differences without you even knowing it!

WHAT YOU THINK IS A SMALL DIFFERENCE, COULD BE A HUGE DIFFERENCE TO SOMEONE ELSE
You might be walking down the street one day and smile at a stranger without thinking anything of it, not realising that that one smile might have brightened up their whole day. You might walk past a homeless person and drop your change into their cup, not realising that you’ve just bought their food for the day. There are so many small acts of kindness that take barely any effort on our part, that could make a world of difference to someone else. And it doesn’t stop there. The person you smiled at could then smile at someone else, brightening their day, and so on and so forth. Everything starts with making changes to ourselves and our own lives, and these small differences have the power to make huge ones!

  3. I totally agree with the throwing rubbish away example. This whole global warming thing could be slowed down so much if we all started thinking this way and doing all the little things to help reduce carbon emissions... geeky side of me just came out haha

  4. I agree with everything you wrote Samantha! If we wait for the opportunity to make a big change at some unknown place and time, we miss so many other occasions of making small changes that actually matter just as much. Caring about others in the smallest ways can mean so much to them, so it's important not to overlook that! :)

  5. This is such a lovely post and I couldn't agree more. It just starts with one person and eventually other people will follow in their footsteps. Leaving uni is so daunting but just put your mind to what you want to do and it can definitely be achieved!!
