A Rambly Post About Pushing Yourself

I said in my last update post that I was hoping to not go weeks without posting anything… turns out I’ve ended up taking a whole month away! I have felt so much guilt these past few weeks over not posting anything on this blog but I’ve had to put university first for a while. I’m thankfully now gearing towards my final deadline before the christmas break and I shouldn’t have another huge surge of work again until January so, hopefully, I can get myself on top of things!
I wanted to write a post today about the topic of pushing yourself, as this is something that’s currently very important in my life right now and I feel like I need to share all of the thoughts currently going on inside my head. I don’t really have a structure for this and I haven’t written in a long while so apologies if this is super rambly/makes no sense/a complete mess!

THE MORE YOU PUSH YOURSELF, THE EASIER THINGS BECOME… Since I started actively trying to change my day to day life and pushing myself to do more of the things that I find scary, suddenly everything didn’t seem so daunting anymore. The more I did things, the easier I found it to do them again. The more I did things, the more I WANTED to do things. I used to look at a situation that seemed overwhelming and feel terrified, now I look at a situation that feels overwhelming and think, sod that, I’m doing it anyway! As you start to do more things, your mentality changes, and as time goes on you’ll end up looking back and thinking, that was so easy!

PUSHING YOURSELF DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN ‘DOING’ THINGS… When someone talks about pushing yourself, usually they mean to DO things, but this doesn’t have to be the case. You can push yourself in so many different ways. For instance, I’ve been pushing myself to look at things in a more positive way. Instead of waking up in the mornings and dreading a busy day at uni, or wishing I could curl up and go back to sleep, I’m pushing myself to feel excited. And you know what? It’s working. Ever since I started choosing to put myself in a good mood, I wake up and realise I just am in a good mood! I wake up at 7am and feel excited to go to university, motivated to write my essays, and determined to make my day productive. And the best thing is that there’s a ripple effect! When you push yourself in one area of your life, you want to push yourself in more. The more I push myself to feel positive, the more I want to push myself to try new things, make more of an effort, see my friends, do the things that scare me. There are so many benefits from just trying.

NOTHING WILL CHANGE UNTIL YOU ACTIVELY CHANGE IT YOURSELF… When you’re in a bad place, having someone tell you to that ‘the only way you’re going to feel better is if YOU push yourself to’ can feel pretty crappy. Nothing is more overwhelming than realising that no matter how much someone helps you, the biggest difference is going to have to come from you. But the thing is, it’s true. You are the only person that can change the way you live your life, or the way that you feel. But you know what the great thing about that is? It means you’re in control. You know how far you might be able to push yourself one day, and how much you need to take a break the next. You get to decide what kind of situations feel out of your comfort zone, but not completely terrifying, and YOU get to choose how you push yourself. So, take all the help from others that you can get, but remember, YOU’RE the one who gets the credit when you make some progress!

PUSH YOURSELF, BUT DO IT BY YOUR OWN RULES… Following on from the point I just mentioned, pushing yourself is great, but YOU GET TO MAKE THE DECISIONS. I have had countless amounts of people assume that they know what’s best for me, which situations I need to put myself in, what things I need to push myself to do. But the thing is, it's NOT up to them. I know what kind of things make me feel uncomfortable, what kind of things I feel okay enough to try and do, what kind of things I am completely not ready for. NO ONE gets to tell you how to push yourself. You do it at YOUR pace. And no matter how small your progress may be, it's still progress! Give yourself credit for any bit that you make!

  1. This is a great post, full of truths. You seem to have reflected a lot and I think this is exactly the right process to realise what you can do to go forward and push yourself as you said but without feeling pressure from any kind. I can only agree with the fact that the more you push yourself, the easier it becomes - you grow stronger and more confident along the way!
