5 Life Lessons I Learnt At 22

If you follow me over on instagram *which btw I'm way more active on right now than this blog*, then you may have seen that last month it was my 23rd birthday! I had a wonderful time celebrating with family and friends, and I thought it would be nice to acknowledge my birthday on this blog with a post about 5 life lessons I learnt in my year of being 22. I know a lot of people do things like '22 things I learnt at 22' but the older I get the more difficult that will become so I figured it was best to just stick to 5!

FRIENDSHIPS CAN SAVE YOU… I spoke about how much my friends have been there for me this past year in my Why We Should All Appreciate Our Friends More post, but honestly, my friends are the reason I’m as happy as I am today! One person in particular has been the most incredible friend to me over the past year or so and pretty much put me back together. If she hadn’t come into my life when she did, I can’t imagine how different things might be today. Friends are just pure gold, treasure them!

NOTHING WILL CHANGE UNTIL YOU PUSH YOURSELF... I ramble on about this topic in far more detail in this post, but in my year of being 22 I learnt that no matter how much you wish for things to get better, nothing will actually change until you get off your butt and do it yourself! The difference in my day to day life now compared to a year ago is huge, and that’s all because I slowly pushed myself until eventually the things that I wanted to be able to do gradually started to happen!

USE YOUR 20'S TO TAKE CHANCES... I’m planning to do a full blog post on this topic soon, hopefully in the new year, because I am so tired of having people tell me how to live my life that I have a lot to say on this subject. In a nutshell, “nothing will ruin your twenties more than thinking you should already have your life together”. If you know exactly what you want to do with your life by the time you're 21, that’s brilliant! Work hard and make it happen. But if you don’t, that’s okay too! Do not listen to anyone who tells you that the ‘proper’ thing to do is get whatever 9-5 job you can get, just to start earning money. Use your twenties to try as many different things as you possibly can!

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH SAYING NO... I think there will always be some part of me that will always hate saying no to people, at the risk of disappointing/annoying them, but compared to how I was a year ago I am now so much better at sticking to my guns and saying no. Sometimes, you just need to be selfish and put yourself first, and there is nothing wrong with that. We only have a certain amount of time on this planet, and I don’t fancy filling it with things that I don’t necessarily want to do, just because I’m scared of letting other people down!

BAD DAYS/MONTHS/YEARS, DO NOT LAST FOREVER... When you’re in the thick of a really crappy time, it feels like it’ll never end and that you’ll be stuck in this miserable mindset forever. You won’t! Life changes every day, and over time you’ll either gradually pull yourself up and feel yourself leaving all the crap behind, or you’ll learn to deal with it better and over time things won’t feel as raw. They say nothing lasts forever, so that has to count for the bad stuff too!

22 has been a bit of a whirlwind of a year, and whilst I'm not exactly overjoyed at the thought of approaching my mid-twenties, I'm so ready for whatever 23 will bring!

  5. First thing about friendship is the closest to my heart. Friends are the best and I can't imagine what would I do if I didn't have them in my life.
