Ten Things I'm Thankful For This Christmas

This Christmas Eve, I thought it would be nice to sit down and write a post about some of the things I'm thankful for this festive season. If I'm being completely honest, I've struggled a little with Christmas this year, and I've noticed more than ever just how commercialised the holiday has become. I've been trying my hardest to get back to the essence of Christmas, and I thought I would share that on here with a post of some of the things I'm incredibly lucky to have this season, and all year round.

MY HOUSE... Walking through the city centre, especially at this time of year, absolutely breaks my heart when I see just how many people there are without a home. It makes me incredibly grateful that I have somewhere warm and safe I'm able to come back to each night.

FRIENDSHIP... I'm thankful for my friends all year round, but the holiday season just makes me appreciate them all the more. Friends really are the family we choose for ourselves, and I adore spending time with the friends that I'm incredibly lucky to have in my life.

BOOKS... Most of my time over the Christmas period *and in general*, is spent under a blanket, eating my weight in chocolate, and reading a good book. They are my escape from reality and bring me so much joy, and I'm very lucky that I'm able to afford to enjoy them.

MY HEALTH... I'm young, I'm fit *even though I could be fitter*, I'm not ill in any way, and I should be so thankful for that. Since I started looking after my body more through exercise, I've come to appreciate just how healthy and lucky I actually am. I can only hope that my health, and the health of those I love, continues to stay well.

MUSIC... Similar to books, I don't know where I'd be without music. There isn't a day that goes by where I don't have music of some sort playing, and Christmas is no exception! I love how positive the festive music is and I can't resist a singalong to my favourites!

MY FAMILY... Put simply, I wouldn't have the life I have without my family, and I'm incredibly lucky to have the family that I do.

MY PHONE... Usually, this is something I would never think to include in a list like this, but during the festive season I'm very thankful that my phone allows me to keep in contact with the people that I'm unable to see face to face. It allows me to message people I love, speak to people that are far away, and share memories with people who I'm unable to create them with.

FOOD... I think it's incredibly easy to get into the habit of simply expecting a Christmas dinner, endless chocolate, and countless comfort meals throughout the festive season, and it's very easy to forget to be thankful that we have food on the table at all. I'm going to be eating a lot of incredible food this Christmas, and I'll be making sure I take the time to be grateful for the fact that I have that food to fill my plate.

MY PETS... Technically, they're not my pets, but my step-dad has two dogs, Bob and Daphne, and they honestly bring me so much happiness. I'm thankful that we've been in a position to be able to afford pets for as long as I can remember, and I'm grateful for the 14 years of happiness I had with my previous dog, Pippin

HYMNS... I'm not particularly religious. I was christened when I was younger but I haven't been to church since my early teens and it's not something I usually gravitate towards. However, there's something about singing hymns at Christmas that I just adore. As I've mentioned, I dislike how commercialised Christmas has become and is becoming each year, and I enjoy reminding myself of why we celebrate it and what the point of it all is; to give, and to be grateful.

  2. This is such a lovely post! Remembering all the things that actually matter this season. Having a home is a big one, and when I see the homeless in the streets it really makes me realise how lucky I am. Thank you for sharing your gratitude list :)
